What Auth0 is

Auth0 is hosted identity: universal login, social and enterprise connections, SAML and OIDC federation, MFA, and Actions for injecting custom logic into the login pipeline. Acquired by Okta in 2021 and now positioned alongside Okta's workforce identity products, with Auth0 remaining the customer-identity side. It is mature, well documented, and comprehensively certified, which is why it keeps winning compliance-driven evaluations. It is also the product most frequently cited in migration-away stories, almost always over per-monthly-active-user pricing that scales uncomfortably for consumer applications. The alternatives split three ways: Clerk and Stytch on developer experience, Supabase Auth and Firebase Auth as a bundled part of a backend, and Keycloak, Ory, Zitadel and Authentik for teams who would rather self-host the whole thing. Auth-included-versus-bolt-on is a field in toolweight's backend comparison for exactly this reason.
