What Datadog is
Datadog is the observability platform that most large engineering organisations end up on, covering infrastructure metrics, APM, logs, RUM, synthetics, security monitoring and a long tail of integrations under one agent. The breadth is real and so is the bill: pricing is per host, per million log events, per span, per synthetic check and per user, and the standard failure mode is a team discovering its observability spend has outgrown its compute spend. That cost profile is why Grafana Cloud, Honeycomb, Better Stack and the self-hosted OpenTelemetry stack keep winning teams back. For toolweight the relevant angle is what hosting and sandbox providers include out of the box — several bundle enough logging and tracing that a separate observability vendor is not needed until a certain scale, and knowing where that line sits is worth more than a feature matrix.
