What Figma is
Figma is the browser-based interface design tool that displaced Sketch by getting multiplayer editing and a shareable URL right before anyone else. For developers the relevant surfaces are Dev Mode, which exposes measurements, tokens and generated CSS from a design file, the plugin API, and the REST API that design-token pipelines read from to keep a codebase and a design system in sync. Adobe's acquisition was abandoned after regulatory pressure and the company listed independently. It competes with Sketch, Adobe XD's remnants, Penpot for teams that want an open-source and self-hostable option, and Framer at the design-to-published-site end. Its relevance to toolweight is narrow but real: design-token export is one of the few places a design tool sits directly inside a build pipeline, and it is the only one of these with an API worth automating against.
