GitHub is where the default copy of most of the world's open source lives, and for many teams it is also CI, package hosting, issue tracking, code review, security scanning and — since Copilot and Agent HQ — the place agents open pull requests. Owned by Microsoft since 2018. The gravitational pull is network effects rather than features: GitLab has arguably the more complete integrated DevOps story and self-hosts more comfortably, Bitbucket integrates more tightly with Atlassian's tools, and Forgejo and Gitea are credible lightweight self-hosted options. None of them have the audience. On toolweight, GitHub matters twice over — stars are one of the traction signals in most category tables, and PR-authoring ability is a rung on the coding-agent autonomy ladder that several harnesses are built specifically to reach.
