What Grafana is

Grafana is the dashboarding layer that most of the open observability stack renders through. It reads from Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, InfluxDB, Elasticsearch, ClickHouse, Postgres and dozens of other sources, which is the point: it does not own your data. Grafana Labs has since built the rest of the stack around it — Loki for logs, Tempo for traces, Mimir for long-term metrics, Pyroscope for profiles — and sells Grafana Cloud as the hosted bundle. The AGPL relicence in 2021 pushed some vendors away but left self-hosting fully viable, which is why it remains the default choice for teams who want observability without a per-host bill. It competes with Datadog and New Relic on the hosted end, Kibana in the Elastic world, and increasingly with the built-in dashboards that hosting platforms ship, which are good enough until they abruptly are not.
