What Linear is
Linear is issue tracking built around the belief that the tool should be fast and opinionated rather than configurable. Keyboard-first, sub-100ms interactions, cycles instead of sprints, and a deliberately small set of concepts — issues, projects, cycles, initiatives — that it declines to let you extend into a bespoke process. Teams either find that liberating or constraining, and there is not much middle ground. The local-first sync engine underneath it is quietly one of the more influential pieces of engineering in the category, and is cited as prior art by most of the sync-engine startups toolweight compares elsewhere. It competes with Jira on the enterprise end, Shortcut and Height in the middle, and GitHub Issues at the free end. Its API and webhooks are good enough that it is a common target for coding agents filing and closing their own work.
