What Namecheap is
Namecheap built the modern discount-registrar playbook — steep first-year .com pricing, WHOIS privacy free for the life of the domain, and 24/7 chat support that is genuinely useful. The renewal is where the economics land, several times the promotional first year on .com. It also operates Spaceship as a separate, newer consumer brand, which complicates the question of where the company's attention is going.

- 2025-09-01Verisign takes another permitted .com increase
Verisign applied one of its contractually permitted annual .com wholesale increases. At-cost registrars such as Cloudflare passed it through within days and their retail prices moved in lockstep. The retail tier mostly absorbed it into a larger scheduled rise, which is why the gap between the cheap and expensive registrars widened in dollars while narrowing in percentage terms.
- 2025-06-01Spaceship becomes Namecheap's front line
Through the first half of 2025 the Namecheap group pushed Spaceship as its primary consumer-facing brand, with the newest dashboard, the most aggressive first-year .com pricing and bundled mailbox trials. The older Namecheap product continues unchanged. The practical effect for buyers is two brands from one company with the same renewal economics and different interfaces.
