What Nginx is

Nginx is the reverse proxy, load balancer and static file server that quietly sits in front of an enormous share of the web, and the piece of infrastructure most likely to still be running unchanged five years after someone configured it. Event-driven rather than process-per-connection, which is what made it the answer to Apache's concurrency ceiling, and durable enough that its configuration language became a de facto standard. Owned by F5 since 2019; the original author's fork, Freenginx, exists but has little adoption. It competes with Caddy, which wins on automatic TLS and a config file people can read, Traefik in container environments where service discovery matters more than raw throughput, HAProxy on pure load balancing, and Envoy wherever a service mesh is involved. Most managed platforms are running one of these on your behalf and not telling you which.
