What Sentry is

Sentry is error and performance monitoring aimed squarely at application developers rather than infrastructure teams. It captures exceptions with full stack traces, source maps, breadcrumbs and release context, groups them into issues, and tells you which deploy introduced what. Session replay, tracing and profiling have since been layered on, which puts it into partial overlap with the observability vendors. Its licence is unusual and worth knowing: the code is source-available under the BSL, converting to Apache 2.0 after three years, and self-hosting is supported and widely used. It competes with Rollbar, Bugsnag and Honeybadger on the error-tracking core, and with Datadog, New Relic and Grafana Cloud on the broader observability story — where the honest tradeoff is that Sentry is markedly better at the developer's question and markedly narrower than a full observability platform.
