What Stripe is

Stripe is the payments API that set the standard for what a developer-facing API should feel like — coherent resources, idempotency keys, test mode with real semantics, versioned changes, and documentation that reads like it was written by someone who had used the product. Beyond card processing it now covers subscriptions and metered billing, tax calculation, invoicing, marketplace payouts through Connect, identity verification, and issuing. The tradeoffs are pricing at scale, where interchange-plus deals from traditional acquirers become competitive, and the platform risk that comes with any single provider owning your money flow. It competes with Adyen and Braintree on the enterprise end, Paddle and Lemon Squeezy as merchants of record who absorb sales-tax obligations, and Polar and Creem in the newer developer-focused tier. Its API design is still the reference point every other category on this site gets compared to.
