What Terraform is
Terraform is the infrastructure-as-code tool that made declarative provisioning across providers normal: describe the desired state in HCL, let the planner diff it against real infrastructure, and apply. The provider ecosystem is the moat — a few thousand of them, covering every major cloud and a long tail of SaaS. HashiCorp's 2023 relicence to the BSL triggered the OpenTofu fork under the Linux Foundation, which is now the drop-in choice for anyone unwilling to accept the licence, and IBM's acquisition of HashiCorp has not fully settled that question. It competes with Pulumi for teams who would rather write real code than HCL, OpenTofu on licence grounds, CloudFormation and CDK inside AWS, and SST for application-shaped deployments. For toolweight it is the honest baseline whenever a platform's selling point is that you do not have to write any of this yourself.
