# Domain registrars, ranked by what it costs to leave

> **Which domain registrar is cheapest to renew with, and which ones make it hard to leave?**
>
> Cloudflare Registrar is the cheapest place to hold a .com because it sells at registry cost, and Porkbun is the best all-round retail registrar. GoDaddy and Crazy Domains win the first year and lose you money from year two. Transfer-out friction, not headline price, is the number that decides the next decade.

## Field registry

| Field | id | Group | Type | Unit | Better | Default weight | Definition |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free WHOIS privacy | `free_whois_privacy` | features | tristate | — | higher | 8 | Is registrant contact redaction included at no cost, for the life of the domain, on the TLDs that permit it? `partial` means free on some TLDs only, free in year one only, or bundled with a paid plan. |
| DNSSEC | `dnssec` | features | tristate | — | higher | 5 | Can DS records be enabled or pasted in from the registrar's own dashboard at no extra charge? `partial` means it exists but needs a paid DNS plan or a support request. |
| DNS hosting | `dns_hosting` | features | enum | — | higher | 5 | Quality of the free DNS bundled with the registration. `anycast-global` = a globally anycast network the registrar operates itself; `standard` = a handful of unicast or regional nameservers; `basic` = limited record types, or anything useful costs extra. |
| Email forwarding | `email_forwarding` | features | tristate | — | higher | 4 | Free forwarding of addresses at the domain to an external mailbox. `partial` means capped alias counts, no catch-all, or bundling only with a paid product. |
| Bulk management | `bulk_management` | features | tristate | — | higher | 4 | Can you select many domains at once in the dashboard and change nameservers, contacts, auto-renew and locks in one operation? `partial` means some fields only, or a hard cap on selection size. |
| TLDs offered | `tld_count` | features | number | TLDs | higher | 4 | Approximate number of top-level domains the registrar sells directly, from its public TLD price list. These are order-of-magnitude indicators, not audited counts. |
| Public API | `api_available` | features | tristate | — | higher | 3 | Is there a documented API a retail customer can use without signing a reseller agreement? Weighted lightly here on purpose — the programmatic comparison lives on the domain API providers page. |
| Support quality | `support_responsiveness` | features | score | — | higher | 6 | 1–5 from documented channels plus consistent user reports. 5 = a knowledgeable human on chat or phone within the hour; 4 = 24/7 chat that resolves domain issues; 3 = ticket queue answered the same business day; 2 = slow queue or scripted replies; 1 = effectively self-service. |
| .com first year | `com_first_year` | pricing | currency | /yr | lower | 3 | Advertised price of a one-year .com registration for a new customer, excluding tax. Promotional pricing is used where it is the headline offer, because that is what the funnel shows you. |
| .com renewal | `com_renewal` | pricing | currency | /yr | lower | 10 | Advertised price of a one-year .com renewal at standard rates, excluding tax and excluding loyalty or club discounts that cost money to join. This is what you actually pay for the life of the domain. |
| Renewal jump | `renewal_delta` | pricing | currency | /yr | lower | 7 | Renewal price minus first-year price, in USD. Zero means the advertised price is the real price. Large positive values mark bait-and-renew pricing. |
| At-cost pricing | `at_cost_pricing` | pricing | tristate | — | higher | 7 | Does the registrar pass through the registry wholesale fee plus the ICANN transaction fee with no margin of its own? `partial` = a thin disclosed margin, or wholesale rates gated behind an account or membership. |
| Fee transparency | `icann_fee_transparency` | pricing | tristate | — | higher | 4 | `yes` = the advertised price is what you pay, with the US$0.18 ICANN fee either included or itemised before the cart; `partial` = itemised only at the cart step; `no` = it surfaces at final checkout or on the invoice. |
| .com.au renewal | `au_renewal` | pricing | currency | /yr | lower | 5 | Advertised price of a one-year .com.au renewal in Australian dollars, excluding GST. Null means the registrar does not sell .au, or we could not confirm the price. |
| Transfer-out friction | `transfer_out_friction` | governance | score | — | lower | 10 | 1–5, lower is better. 1 = unlock toggle and auth code both on screen in the dashboard, no retention interstitial, no fee. 2 = code in the dashboard but behind an email round-trip or a second confirmation screen. 3 = a mandated delay of up to 24h, or a retention offer you must dismiss to proceed. 4 = the code needs a support ticket or an extra identity check, with repeated confirmation emails. 5 = a phone call, an uploaded ID, an add-on that must be cancelled first, or a hold beyond the ICANN 60-day rule. |
| Auth code delivery | `epp_code_delivery` | governance | enum | — | higher | 7 | How the EPP authorisation code reaches you once the domain is unlocked: shown immediately in the dashboard, shown after an emailed confirmation, emailed after a delay, raised as a support ticket, or gated behind a phone call or identity document. |
| Registry lock | `registry_lock` | governance | tristate | — | higher | 5 | A true registry-level lock requiring out-of-band authorisation to change NS, contacts or registrar — not the clientTransferProhibited flag every registrar sets by default. `partial` = a paid add-on, selected TLDs only, or available only through a corporate product line. |
| 2FA methods | `two_factor` | governance | multi-enum | — | higher | 6 | Second-factor methods the account supports, scored on the strongest available. SMS-only scores as weak because domain accounts are a standard SIM-swap target. |
| .au accredited | `au_accreditation` | governance | tristate | — | higher | 6 | Is this entity itself accredited by auDA to sell .au namespace domains? `partial` = sells .au as a reseller through an accredited registrar, which means escalations travel through a third party. |
| Account recovery | `account_recovery` | governance | score | — | higher | 5 | 1–5 for how well-defined and safe the lost-access path is. 5 = documented identity-verified recovery with a published turnaround; 3 = ticket-based recovery with no stated SLA; 1 = undocumented or effectively unrecoverable. A strong recovery process is also a social-engineering surface, so read it next to the 2FA column. |
| Domains managed | `domains_under_mgmt` | traction | number | M | higher | 2 | Approximate domains under management in millions, from company disclosures or registry market-share reporting. Scale is a proxy for survival odds, not for quality. |
| Ownership | `ownership` | traction | enum | — | higher | 2 | Who owns the registrar, ranked by how much pressure the owner applies to monetise the existing book. Private-equity ownership has been the most reliable predictor of renewal price rises and add-on packaging in this category. |
| Upsell aggression | `upsell_aggression` | marketing | score | — | lower | 6 | 1–5, lower is better, counted across the buy flow and the dashboard. 1 = a cart with the domain in it and nothing else. 3 = a few prominently offered extras you decline in one click, none pre-ticked. 5 = multiple interstitials, pre-selected add-ons, hosting and email bundles, and continuing in-account promotion after purchase. |
| Ad parking | `parking_ads` | marketing | tristate | — | lower | 4 | Does the registrar point unconfigured domains at a monetised page carrying third-party ads or its own promotions? `partial` = a plain branded placeholder without third-party advertising, or parking that is opt-in. |
| Positioning | `positioning` | marketing | text | — | n/a | 0 | How the registrar positions itself to retail buyers, in our words rather than theirs. |

## Verdict

Domain retail is a subscription business disguised as a purchase. The first year is the customer-acquisition budget; every year after that is the margin. That is why a .com can be advertised at A$4.95 and renew at A$39.95, and why the only price on this page that matters is the renewal column. If you register a domain you intend to keep, the first-year price is noise.

Three registrars are worth defaulting to. Cloudflare Registrar charges the registry fee plus the ICANN transaction fee and nothing else — there is no markup and there never has been, because domains exist to pull you onto Cloudflare's DNS. The catch is that it only registers domains you already have on a Cloudflare zone, it sells a narrow TLD list, no .au, and support is a ticket queue. Porkbun is the better general-purpose choice: near-cost pricing, free WHOIS privacy, free email forwarding, free SSL, one-click DNSSEC, and an auth code sitting in the dashboard the moment you unlock. NameSilo is the one to use when you hold hundreds of domains and care more about bulk tooling and flat renewals than about the interface.

The expensive end is expensive for a reason. GoDaddy and Crazy Domains run the same playbook — loss-leader first year, aggressive checkout upsells, paid add-ons for things competitors give away (DNSSEC behind Premium DNS at GoDaddy, free email forwarding withdrawn in 2022), and an exit path that routes through retention offers. Squarespace Domains inherited the Google Domains book at a flat twenty dollars and has been quietly the least annoying of the expensive registrars, but you are paying roughly double Cloudflare for a nicer control panel. Gandi used to be the principled European choice and repriced itself out of that role in 2023; it is now a specialist pick for TLD breadth and registry lock, not a value one.

For .au the calculus is different and mostly not about price. auDA-accredited registrars — VentraIP, Synergy Wholesale, Crazy Domains, GoDaddy — differ by an amount of money that will not change your life, and differ enormously in whether a human answers when a .com.au transfer stalls. VentraIP and Synergy Wholesale both run Australian support desks that understand the auDA transfer rules; the international registrars that resell .au generally do not. WHOIS privacy is irrelevant here: auDA already redacts registrant contact data, so a registrar charging you for .au privacy is charging you for nothing.

The direction of travel is consolidation. Verisign takes its permitted .com increase in most years and every registrar passes it through, which slowly compresses the gap between the cheap and expensive tiers in percentage terms while widening it in dollars. Meanwhile the interesting registrars are becoming front ends for something else — Cloudflare wants your DNS, Squarespace wants your site, Spaceship wants Namecheap's next decade of customers. Pick the one whose real business you are happy to be adjacent to.

## The renewal trap

Every registrar in this table knows the same thing: domain churn is low. Once a domain is attached to a live site, an MX record and a dozen DNS entries nobody remembers creating, the annual renewal invoice gets approved without being read. That is the asset being bought when a registrar sells you a .com for the price of a coffee.

The delta column makes the strategy visible. Cloudflare, Porkbun, NameSilo, Squarespace and Gandi charge roughly the same in year one as in year five — different amounts, but flat. Namecheap, Spaceship, GoDaddy, Sav and Crazy Domains do not, and the gap runs from a few dollars to more than twenty. Crazy Domains is the extreme case: a first year priced to win a comparison-shopping click, and a renewal priced for someone who has stopped comparison shopping.

There are two defences. The first is to prepay — nearly every registrar will sell up to ten years of a .com up front at the current renewal rate, which locks out both the registrar's margin creep and Verisign's annual increase. The second is to treat the renewal price as the only price, sort this table by it, and accept paying five dollars more in year one for the privilege of never thinking about it again.

## Getting out: what a transfer actually costs you

Transfers are governed by ICANN's transfer policy, so the mechanics are identical everywhere: unlock, get the authorisation code, initiate at the gaining registrar, approve. What differs is how many steps a registrar inserts between you and that code, and none of those steps are in the transfer policy. The friction score on this page is that count.

At the good end — Cloudflare, Porkbun, Synergy Wholesale — the code is a field in the dashboard next to the lock toggle, and the whole thing takes ninety seconds plus the five-day registry wait. In the middle sit registrars that email the code after a delay, ask you to re-verify the account, or put a retention offer in front of the button. At the bad end you are on the phone, uploading identity documents, or discovering that a domain-protection product you were upsold in 2023 must be cancelled before the domain will unlock at all.

Two rules apply regardless of registrar. You cannot transfer a domain within 60 days of registering it or of a previous transfer, and changing the registrant contact can restart that clock — so do the transfer first and tidy the contacts afterwards. And your unused time comes with you: a transfer adds a year to the existing expiry rather than resetting it, so leaving mid-term costs you nothing beyond the year you buy on the way in. .au transfers work differently again — a registrar-issued auth code, no ICANN five-day window, and an accredited Australian registrar will unstick a stalled one far faster than an offshore reseller.

## Buying and holding .au in 2026

.au has rules the gTLDs do not. You need an Australian presence — an ABN, ACN, registered trademark or equivalent — and for .com.au that presence must be a commercial entity. The registrar checks it, and a mismatch can cost you the name later. Since direct .au registration opened, most businesses hold both the .com.au and the matching .au, which doubles the renewal line and is worth budgeting for.

Price differences between accredited Australian registrars are small and rarely the deciding factor. Support is. When a .com.au is stuck mid-transfer or an eligibility check fails, you want a registrar that can speak to the registry on your behalf during Australian business hours, which is what VentraIP and Synergy Wholesale actually sell. Crazy Domains is accredited and cheap in year one, and behaves like the international discount registrars in every other respect.

One thing not to pay for: .au WHOIS privacy. auDA already withholds registrant contact details from public WHOIS, so a privacy add-on on an Australian domain is a line item with no product behind it.

## Registering domains from code

This page is about buying, renewing, transferring and holding domains through a dashboard, as a person. If you are automating registration — provisioning a domain per customer, sweeping availability, wiring DNS records from a deploy script — the constraints are completely different: reseller agreements, prepaid balances, OTE sandboxes, and whether renewal pricing is even exposed on the wire.

Looking to register domains from code? → /compare/domain-api-providers

The overlap in vendor names is real but the decision is not the same one. Several registrars that are excellent to hold domains with have no public API at all, and several with first-class APIs will not take your money until you sign a reseller contract and fund a four-figure float.

**Verdict.** The cheapest place on earth to hold a .com, with the caveat that it is a feature of Cloudflare rather than a standalone registrar — the domain must sit on a Cloudflare zone, the TLD list is short, and there is no phone number when something goes wrong.

**Pick it when**

- You already run DNS on Cloudflare and want the registration to cost nothing extra
- Long-term holds where the renewal price compounds
- Anyone who wants zero upsell surface on a domain account

**Verdict.** The registrar for people who own more domains than they can name. Flat renewal pricing and serious bulk operations, wrapped in a dashboard that has aged without dignity.

**Pick it when**

- Portfolios in the hundreds where bulk edits are a weekly task
- You want the renewal to equal the registration price, permanently
- Cost discipline matters more than UI

| Positioning | Registrar plus aftermarket, aimed at people who trade domains. | Inferred | — | — | — | #dynadot-positioning |

**Verdict.** A good middle option that gets better the more domains you hold, with auction and marketplace tooling built in. The renewal step-up is small enough to ignore and the bulk tools are genuinely strong.

**Pick it when**

- You buy and sell domains as well as using them

**Verdict.** Perfectly fine and permanently mid-table: the first year is among the cheapest and the renewal among the dearer, so it only wins if you genuinely churn domains. The lifetime free privacy remains the best thing about it.

**Pick it when**

- Short-lived or speculative registrations you will not renew
- You want 24/7 chat rather than a ticket queue
- Consolidating a portfolio somewhere mainstream and well-staffed

**Verdict.** The nicest dashboard in the discount tier, and the same renewal economics as its parent. Worth using if you like the interface, but do not mistake the intro price for the price.

**Pick it when**

- You want cheap domains without Namecheap's 2010s interface
- Short-term projects where the first-year price dominates
- Bundled mailbox trials alongside the registration

- Non-technical owners who need a human to talk to
- Anyone allergic to checkout upsells

| Positioning | Australian-owned, accredited, and answers the phone. | Inferred | — | — | — | #ventraip-positioning |

**Verdict.** The straightforward choice for .au if you want an Australian company on the other end of the phone. Do not bring your gTLDs — those cost noticeably more here than at Porkbun or Cloudflare.

**Pick it when**

- .com.au and .au for an Australian business
- You want local support who understand auDA eligibility rules
- Domains bundled with Australian-hosted infrastructure

| Ad parking | ○ | Inferred | — | — | — | #squarespace-domains-parking_ads |
| Positioning | Google Domains' calm, at roughly double Cloudflare's price. | Inferred | — | — | — | #squarespace-domains-positioning |

**Verdict.** The least irritating of the expensive registrars, and where most former Google Domains customers ended up by inertia. Flat pricing and no upsell theatre, but you are paying a site-builder company's margin on a commodity.

**Pick it when**

- You already run the site on Squarespace
- One flat annual price with privacy included and no promotions to track
- Inherited Google Domains registrations you cannot be bothered moving

| Positioning | Cheapest acquisition, monetised everywhere else. | Inferred | — | — | — | #sav-positioning |

**Verdict.** Cheap to buy from, and not somewhere to keep anything important. The business runs on the aftermarket, which means the incentives around your idle domains are not yours.

**Pick it when**

- Bulk speculative acquisition where per-domain cost dominates
- Domains you intend to flip rather than build on
- Not: anything with a production DNS record on it

### GoDaddy {#godaddy}

| Positioning | The default, defended by advertising rather than by price. | Inferred | — | — | — | #godaddy-positioning |

**Verdict.** The highest exit cost in the roster outside Crazy Domains, and the reason 'transfer domain away from GoDaddy' is a search term. Nothing here is broken; it is simply priced and packaged to extract more from customers who do not comparison-shop.

**Pick it when**

- You need .au and gTLDs from one accredited vendor with 24/7 phone support
- Auctions and aftermarket inventory, where GoDaddy's scale is real
- Not: holding domains cheaply, or leaving quickly

**Verdict.** The clearest illustration of why this page ranks on exit cost rather than entry price: a single-digit first year, a renewal several times higher, and the most obstructed transfer-out process in the roster.

**Pick it when**

- Nothing we would pick over VentraIP or Synergy Wholesale at similar effort
- Registering something disposable for one year and abandoning it
- If you are already here: get the auth code before the next renewal date, not after

## Methodology

Prices are the advertised retail price for a one-year .com registration and a one-year .com renewal, in US dollars, excluding sales tax and GST, taken from public pricing pages rather than logged-in carts. The delta column is renewal minus first year — the number the marketing is designed to stop you computing. Australian figures are .com.au retail renewal in AUD excluding GST. Where a registrar quotes in another currency the figure has been converted at an approximate mid-market rate and flagged as inferred. Treat every price cell here as accurate to the dollar, not the cent, and re-check before buying in bulk.

Transfer-out friction is a 1–5 ladder scored from the documented process plus consistent user reports, not from vendor claims. Level 1 means the domain unlocks with one toggle and the auth code is on screen immediately. Level 5 means a phone call, an identity document, a paid add-on that must be cancelled first, or a hold beyond the ICANN 60-day rule. The scores at levels 4 and 5 are the ones we most want to replace with measured runs: the plan is to attempt a real transfer out of each registrar on the 30-day verification cycle and re-label the result as measured. Until then these cells are marked community or inferred, and you should read them as "how much of your afternoon this will cost", not as a stopwatch reading.

## FAQ

### Which registrar has the cheapest .com renewal?

Cloudflare Registrar, because it charges the Verisign wholesale fee plus the ICANN transaction fee and adds nothing. Porkbun, NameSilo and Synergy Wholesale sit a dollar or two above it. The catch with Cloudflare is that the domain must live on a Cloudflare DNS zone and the TLD list is short. If your TLD is not one Cloudflare sells, Porkbun is the cheapest sane fallback.

### How do I transfer a domain away from GoDaddy?

Unlock the domain, turn off any privacy or protection add-on that blocks the unlock, request the authorisation code, then start the transfer at the gaining registrar and approve the emails from both sides. Budget a couple of days and expect retention offers in the middle. You cannot transfer within 60 days of registering or of a previous transfer, and the domain must not be in redemption.

### Is Cloudflare Registrar actually free?

No — it is at-cost. You pay the registry's wholesale fee plus the US$0.18 ICANN fee, which for a .com lands a little over eleven dollars a year in 2026 and rises whenever Verisign raises it. What is free is everything around it: WHOIS privacy, DNSSEC, anycast DNS, email routing. Cloudflare takes no margin because the domain is a funnel, not the product.

### Does WHOIS privacy still matter if registrant data is already redacted?

For gTLDs it matters less than it used to — post-GDPR, public WHOIS output for .com is largely redacted by default. It still matters because registries, resellers and bulk data licensees see more than the public record does, and because a registrar that charges for privacy tells you how it will treat every other add-on. For .au it is genuinely pointless: auDA redacts registrant contact data itself.

### Should I keep DNS at my registrar or move it elsewhere?

Separate them if the domain matters. Registrar DNS is convenient but couples two failure modes — a billing dispute or an account lockout takes down registration and resolution together. Cloudflare, Route 53 and Bunny all run better anycast than most registrar DNS. Splitting also makes a future transfer boring, because the nameservers never change and nothing goes dark mid-transfer.

### Who should I register a .com.au with?

An auDA-accredited registrar with an Australian support desk: VentraIP for a handful of domains, Synergy Wholesale if you hold domains for clients. Both understand the .au transfer process, which uses a registrar-issued auth code and different rules from gTLDs. Avoid the bait pricing at Crazy Domains — the first year is single digits and the renewal is roughly triple it.

### What happens if I let a domain expire?

Most registrars park it, stop resolution, then hold it through a grace period of around 30 days at the normal renewal price, followed by an ICANN redemption period where recovery costs a restore fee — commonly US$80–100 on top of the renewal. After that it is deleted and may go to auction. Auto-renew plus a card that has not expired is the entire mitigation.

| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 2025-09-01 | pricing | **Verisign takes another permitted .com increase** — Verisign applied one of its contractually permitted annual .com wholesale increases. At-cost registrars such as Cloudflare passed it through within days and their retail prices moved in lockstep. The retail tier mostly absorbed it into a larger scheduled rise, which is why the gap between the cheap and expensive registrars widened in dollars while narrowing in percentage terms. | cloudflare-registrar, porkbun, namecheap, godaddy | — |
| 2025-06-01 | launch | **Spaceship becomes Namecheap's front line** — Through the first half of 2025 the Namecheap group pushed Spaceship as its primary consumer-facing brand, with the newest dashboard, the most aggressive first-year .com pricing and bundled mailbox trials. The older Namecheap product continues unchanged. The practical effect for buyers is two brands from one company with the same renewal economics and different interfaces. | spaceship, namecheap | — |
| 2025-03-01 | pricing | **Migrated Google Domains customers hit standard Squarespace pricing** — The Google Domains book moved to Squarespace across 2023–24 at grandfathered rates. By early 2025 most of those registrations had renewed at Squarespace's standard flat pricing, which on a .com is roughly double what Google charged. Squarespace did not raise prices so much as stop honouring an acquired price list, and it drove a visible wave of transfers to Cloudflare and Porkbun. | squarespace-domains, cloudflare-registrar, porkbun | — |
| 2024-10-14 | funding | **Squarespace taken private by Permira** — Permira completed its acquisition of Squarespace, moving one of the largest consumer domain books on this page into private-equity ownership. Ownership structure is not a feature, but in this category it has been a reliable leading indicator of renewal price rises and add-on packaging, which is why it is a scored column here. | squarespace-domains | — |
| 2024-06-01 | deprecation | **GoDaddy narrows API access for small accounts** — GoDaddy restricted its domain API to accounts holding a meaningful number of domains or an active paid Discount Domain Club plan, cutting off small-portfolio automation that had worked for years. On this page it matters mainly as a signal about how retail customers are treated. The programmatic consequences are covered on the domain API providers comparison. | godaddy | — |
