# Telstra Messaging API

> The only provider on this list that owns the Australian network your message lands on.

Telstra's Messaging API is the sole direct-carrier option here: no aggregator sits between the API call and the network. That removes an entire class of routing failure and gives the strongest possible data residency and compliance position. Everything else about it behaves like a carrier rather than a developer platform, pricing is not publicly listed, and moving from dev-portal trial to production traffic requires a Telstra commercial account.

## Where it is compared

### [AU SMS APIs](https://toolweight.com/compare/sms-api-providers-australia)
Ranked **#8 of 13** on default weights.
| Field | Value | Confidence | Verified | Source | Note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Price /SMS @ 1k | - | Unknown | - | - | Telstra does not publish per-message rates outside a commercial account. |
| Price /SMS @ 10k | - | Unknown | - | - | - |
| Price /SMS @ 100k | - | Unknown | - | - | - |
| Dedicated number | - | Unknown | - | - | - |
| Min top-up | - | Unknown | - | - | - |
| Billing model | contract-required | Inferred | - | - | The developer portal trial is free; production traffic sits on a Telstra commercial account. |
| Self-serve API key | ◐ | Inferred | - | - | Dev-portal registration issues credentials and free trial messages, but production sending requires a Telstra account relationship. |
| Alphanumeric sender | ● | Inferred | - | - | - |
| Two-way messaging | ● | Inferred | - | - | - |
| MMS to AU | - | Unknown | - | - | - |
| RCS | ◐ | Inferred | - | - | Telstra is an RCS carrier; API-level availability is unclear. |
| Delivery receipts | ● | Inferred | - | - | - |
| Unicode billing doc | ◐ | Inferred | - | - | - |
| API style | rest-json | Inferred | - | - | - |
| SDK languages | node, python | Inferred | - | - | Limited first-party SDK coverage. |
| Public status page | ◐ | Inferred | - | - | Telstra publishes network status rather than an API-specific incident feed. |
| AU legal entity | ● | Inferred | - | - | - |
| ACMA Sender ID | - | Unknown | - | - | Deliberately unrecorded. Australia's SMS Sender ID Register obligations changed recently and vendor documentation lags the regulator. Pending verification against ACMA directly, do not rely on this for compliance. |
| AU data residency | ● | Inferred | - | - | - |
| Opt-out built in | ◐ | Inferred | - | - | - |
| Carrier route | direct-carrier | Inferred | - | - | Telstra is the network. No aggregator sits between the API and delivery on Telstra mobiles. |
| MCP server | ○ | Inferred | - | - | - |
| Agent-ready docs | 3 | Inferred | - | - | - |
| Operating since | 2015 | Inferred | - | - | - |
| Ownership | carrier | Inferred | - | - | - |
| Positioning | The carrier selling its own network directly. Unmatched routing position, carrier-shaped commercials. | Inferred | - | - | - |

**Verdict.** The strongest possible answer on routing, residency and compliance posture, and the weakest on everything a developer evaluates in the first hour. An existing Telstra commercial relationship makes it dramatically more attractive than it looks from the outside.
