Changelog

October 2024

3 changes across the tools toolweight tracks. Newest first.

  1. Pricing

Fly.io withdraws its standing free allowance

During late 2024 Fly moved from a permanent free allowance to trial credit plus pay-as-you-go, ending the era of running small always-on apps there for nothing. Existing hobby workloads had to start paying, and Fly's positioning shifted decisively from 'Heroku but free' to 'microVMs close to your users'.

  2. Funding

    Squarespace taken private by Permira

Permira completed its acquisition of Squarespace, moving one of the largest consumer domain books on this page into private-equity ownership. Ownership structure is not a feature, but in this category it has been a reliable leading indicator of renewal price rises and add-on packaging, which is why it is a scored column here.

  3. Launch

Amazon renames Pinpoint SMS to AWS End User Messaging

The SMS and voice components of Amazon Pinpoint were rebranded as AWS End User Messaging, consolidating what had previously been split between SNS SMS and Pinpoint. For Australian senders nothing functionally changed: sender ID registration remains a support-ticket workflow and pricing remains a flat per-destination rate with no volume tiering.
