Changelog

May 2025

8 changes across the tools toolweight tracks. Newest first.

  1. Launch

Bright Data publishes a first-party MCP server

Exposes the Browser API and its scraping products to MCP clients. Within months nearly every vendor in the category had shipped one, turning MCP from a differentiator into a checkbox.

  2. Launch

    Backblaze launches B2 Overdrive

A higher-throughput B2 tier aimed at AI and HPC workloads, priced above standard B2 in exchange for much higher aggregate bandwidth. Standard B2 pay-as-you-go pricing was unaffected at the time, but it signalled that the flat commodity tier is no longer the whole product — B2 has since moved to $6.95/TB with all Class A, B and C API calls free.

  3. Launch

    Google launches Firebase Studio

At I/O 2025 Google put an agentic app builder in front of Firebase, generating Firestore schemas, rules and functions from prompts. It sharpens the trade Firebase has always offered: the fastest possible start, on the least portable stack in this comparison.

  4. Funding

    Databricks agrees to acquire Neon

Databricks announced an agreement to acquire Neon in a deal reported at roughly US$1bn, citing agent-driven database provisioning as the motivation. Neon's branching remains the best fit here for per-agent database environments — now under a very different owner.

  5. Funding

    Databricks acquires Neon

Serverless Postgres gets absorbed into a data-platform vendor at roughly a billion dollars, on the stated thesis that agents create databases faster than humans do. Read it as confirmation that the money in this category is entirely in who operates the engine, which is why this page has no pricing column.

  6. Change

Microsoft applies bulk sender requirements to Outlook.com

Microsoft began enforcing SPF, DKIM and DMARC on high-volume senders to outlook.com, hotmail.com and live.com, initially routing non-compliant mail to junk. The practical effect is that a working DMARC record is now table stakes at all three major consumer mailbox providers, not just Google and Yahoo.

  7. Change

    Together AI acquires CodeSandbox

Together AI acquired CodeSandbox, absorbing the Firecracker and memory-snapshot infrastructure behind the browser IDE. The SDK kept shipping, but its roadmap now answers to an inference company rather than a developer-tools one.

  8. Funding

    Vercel raises a Series F at a reported $9.3B

A roughly $300M round valued Vercel near $9.3 billion, on the back of the AI SDK and v0 rather than hosting alone. The strategic read for anyone choosing a host: Vercel's growth story is now AI tooling, and hosting revenue increasingly funds it. That is not an argument for cheaper bandwidth.
