xAI

xAI is grok models with an OpenAI-shaped API and live X data access. We compare it in LLM APIs. The trade-off is being 16th of 18 on API since (2024).

What is xAI?

xAI — Grok models with an OpenAI-shaped API and live X data access. xAI serves the Grok family through an API deliberately shaped like OpenAI's, so porting is close to a base-URL change. Its differentiators are real-time access to X/Twitter content and aggressive pricing on the fast tiers. The trade-off is a thinner enterprise story: less published governance, fewer regions, and a shorter track record on deprecation handling than the older labs. Founded 2023. Late-stage private.

We track it in 1 comparison — LLM APIs — so every claim below is a cell in a table you can open and check rather than an impression. Across those rosters it sits against 17 other tools, and what follows is where it visibly separates from them.

Where it gives ground.

  • API since — 2024, 16th of 18. OpenAI records 2020.

None of these disqualify it on their own. They are the fields to check against your own requirements before you commit, because they are the ones where a competitor genuinely does better.

Provenance. 16 of 27 tracked fields carry a value for xAI, and 1 of those cite a document you can open. Last verified 2026-01-15. Every figure keeps its own provenance — measured by us, claimed by the vendor, inferred, or community-reported — and we would rather print a dash than a guess.

Its nearest neighbour in our data is Qwen. xAI is ahead on Schema output (Yes against Partial) and Image input (Yes against Partial). Qwen takes MCP support (Partial against No) and AU region (Partial against No). That pattern repeats across the rest of the roster — see xAI alternatives for the other rivals, each compared the same way.

xAI in LLM APIs

Ranked against 18 tools across 27 sourced fields. Open the full LLM APIs table.

Trivially easy to try given the OpenAI-shaped API, and the fast tiers are widely reported as some of the best price-performance in the category — but note that this row currently carries no price or context figure at all. The numbers that were here described Grok 4 while the row named Grok 4.1, and a wrong number is worse than a blank one, so they were pulled rather than patched. Read the pricing page yourself before budgeting. The governance story is separately the thinnest of the first-party labs — no published deprecation policy, no regional pinning, and terms that need reading rather than assuming. Fine for consumer features, harder to justify for regulated work.

When to use xAI

xAI is the right call in these situations, each one drawn from a field we actually record:

  • Products that want real-time X/Twitter context in the model.
  • Cheap evaluation of a frontier alternative with a one-line base-URL change.
  • Consumer applications where governance requirements are light.

When not to use xAI

Reach for something else when any of the following is a requirement rather than a nice-to-have:

  • API since. xAI records 2024, 16th of 18 in the LLM APIs roster. OpenAI records 2020 on the same field. If that is a hard requirement rather than a preference, start elsewhere.

We publish this block because a comparison that only lists what a tool is good at is marketing. Every figure above sits on the same page as its source, and the field definitions are on the category tables if you want to check how we measured them.

Tools compared alongside xAI

Everything below shares at least one comparison category with xAI, ordered by how much overlap there is. For the reasoning on each — which fields it wins, which it loses — see xAI alternatives.
Alibaba's model family — huge open-weight range, closed flagship
Wafer-scale inference — the fastest tokens per second available
Enterprise-focused models built for RAG and private deployment

Recent xAI changes

We have not logged a dated change for xAI yet. The timeline fills in as pricing moves, features ship and things get deprecated.

Sources and gaps

What we don't know. 11 of the 27 fields we track for xAI are still blank: Context window, Max output, TTFT p50, Output tok/s, $/M input, $/M output, $/M cache read and Batch discount, and 3 more. Those render as dashes rather than as zeroes or assumptions, because an empty cell and a bad cell are not the same thing and only one of them is honest. If you know any of these figures and can point at a document, tell us.

Every figure on this page traces back to a document you can open. Where a vendor claims a number we could not reproduce, the cell says so.
